Unilock Construction in Laguna Beach, CA | San Bernardino Contractors

If you’re searching for Unilock construction service in Laguna Beach, you likely already know the product. What you may not know is that how we prep for it here matters far more than which paver you pick. We provide independent Unilock installation and repair across Laguna Beach, and the one thing that separates our work from a flat-land Orange County crew is how we handle the hillside staging, drainage, and geotech demands that come with nearly every lot in this city. We are not a manufacturer rep. We’re a full-service contractor who builds from the base course up. Call us at (855) 473-5620 to talk through your project.

Call (855) 473-5620

We carry deep Unilock familiarity across the product range, from Brussels Block to Beacon Hill, Richcliff, and Town Hall, and we’ve worked those pavers into driveways, patios, and pool surrounds all over Laguna Beach. Ruben Castillo runs our operation, and his background doing framing and structural work across the Inland Empire means he reads a slope the way a mason reads a level. He’s the one who’ll walk your property before any numbers get written down, and he’ll tell you straight if your subgrade is going to fight you. That’s the difference between a bid that holds up and one that goes sideways after the first rain.

We’re an independent Unilock installer, not a manufacturer-authorized dealer, and that matters in Laguna Beach. Our loyalty goes to your drainage plan, your geotech report, and what the slope is actually doing. That means we can tell you when a different product or a different detail will serve you better, without worrying about a brand sales sheet. We also offer Unilock sales & service across this market, including everything from material selection advice to full tear-out and re-lay of a failing field.

Why Laguna Beach Residents Choose Us for Unilock Service

Most people in Laguna Beach don’t call us because they found us on a list. They call because a neighbor in Arch Beach Heights or Bluebird Canyon watched our crew work, or because their previous paver job failed and someone told them our name. Ruben’s reputation in this area is built on projects that hold up to the marine layer, the salt air, and the winter runoff that punishes cheap base courses. Ruben grew up on the Westside of San Bernardino, watching his uncle reroof houses and frame garages on a shoestring, and that education stuck: don’t cut corners on anything structural, because the weather will find it.

What we bring is specific. We know the corrosion cycle on steel edge restraints near the coast. We know which joint sands survive a wet winter on a 15-20% grade. And we know that on a slope-constrained lot, the base course under your Unilock pavers is doing more engineering work than the pavers themselves. We’ve laid Unilock on hillside lots where the foundation is a pier-and-grade deck, where the base had to be built over a retaining wall, and where the storm runoff had to be intercepted before it ever touched the paver field. That’s not general paver installation. That’s Laguna Beach construction.

We also handle the whole property, not just the hardscape. You want the driveway replaced and a retaining wall rebuilt and the windows swapped for PGT impact glass? One contract, one schedule, no shuffle between a paver crew and a stucco sub who won’t return calls. If it’s not built right the first time, you’re just paying for it twice.

Common Unilock Construction Problems We Solve in Laguna Beach

Unilock pavers are well made. That’s why we sell and install them. But no paver survives for long when the base, the restraint, or the drainage detail is wrong for this specific environment. Here’s what we see most often in Laguna Beach:

  • Rusted edge restraints under Brussels Block driveways. Marine-layer salt air and constant residual moisture eat through the steel restraints that hold the field perimeter. Once the restraint fails, the drive edge spreads, the Brussels Block units drift, and you get a scalloped perimeter. We cut out the failed steel, replace it with Unilock’s matching restraint, and re-set the edge course.
  • Joint sand scouring on Richcliff and Beacon Hill installations. Winter storm runoff that sheets off steep Laguna Beach driveways moves fast. Fast enough to jet the polymeric sand out of the joints. Once the sand goes, the units rack, chip at the corners, and start rocking underfoot. On grades over 12%, standard sand won’t last. We re-sand with a spec that handles slope, and we often tie in a channel drain to cut the water velocity before it hits the field.
  • Lippage and heave on Town Hall fields built over retaining walls or pier decks. Slope-constrained lots often put the paver field directly on top of a retaining structure, and if hillside drainage saturates the base, you get differential settlement that reads as lippage between Town Hall units. We open it up, correct the drainage path, re-compact, and re-lay. If the retaining wall itself is suspect, that gets addressed before the pavers go back.
  • Hairline cracks and efflorescence on older Brussels Block near the Village. The Village in Laguna Beach has some of the oldest housing stock in the city, and a lot of the subgrade is clay-heavy soil that was never over-excavated and re-compacted before the pavers went in. That shows up as edge cracking and whitish efflorescence. When we re-lay, we over-excavate, replace with engineered base, and compact in lifts.
  • Improper staging damage on tight lots. We’ve seen Unilock pallets dropped on a slope-bound lot where the delivery driver had nowhere to set them except the front hillside. That compacts the planting, tears up existing landscape, and sometimes cracks a driveway apron before the job even starts. We plan staging before we order the first pallet. More on that below.

Unilock Service in Laguna Beach: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Because so many Laguna Beach lots are too steep to stage on, Unilock pallets often sit on the street or get craned over the house. And the reality is that any paver base that can’t cure properly on a slope-bound lot is a failure waiting for the next winter runoff. That staging-and-base reality, not the paver style, drives most of our bids in this city. We’ve bid enough Arch Beach Heights and Temple Hills projects to know the crane cost before we quote the base course, and we know how to protect a narrow street in Bluebird Canyon while a forklift unloads Brussels Block at the curb. We also offer Unilock service in Laguna Hills.

Take the typical Temple Hills drive with a grade pushing 20%. The original paver installer may have done a decent surface course, but if the clay subgrade wasn’t over-excavated, and if the edge restraint wasn’t tied into a proper drain, that drive is going to start failing within two or three winters. The visible symptom is usually a washout at the curb or a sagging edge. The cause is almost always below. We pull the field, re-engineer the base, and re-lay with Unilock’s matching restraints and a joint sand that can hold on a slope. We did exactly that on a Temple Hills project recently: pulled up a failing Brussels Block apron where the old edge restraint had rusted through in the salt air and the joint sand had washed out below the street crown. We over-excavated the clay subgrade, re-set a geogrid-stabilized base, and re-laid the Brussels Block with new Unilock edge restraints and polymeric sand, tying the runoff into a new channel drain so the winter flow stops scouring the joints.

That’s the kind of repair that shows up as a small visual problem but is actually a subgrade failure. And it’s the kind of thing a manufacturer brochure will never tell you about.

Unilock Models & Products We Service in Laguna Beach

We work across the full Unilock residential range, with the four most common model families in Laguna Beach being Brussels Block, Beacon Hill, Richcliff, and Town Hall, and we handle Unilock repair in Laguna Woods. We carry Unilock’s own matching edge restraints and polymeric joint sand rather than generic substitutes, because salt-air corrosion and runoff scour punish cheap hardware fast. When a field is 80% sound, we lift, re-base, and re-lay rather than tear out. We only recommend full replacement when the subgrade itself has failed, and in that case we’ll show you the failed base before we quote a new one.

We also handle paver driveways, paver patios, and concrete driveways across Laguna Beach, including the 92651 and 92652 ZIP codes. If your project is outside Laguna Beach proper, we also provide Laguna Beach service area details to help you confirm coverage before you call.

Unilock Service Pricing in Laguna Beach

Cost on a Laguna Beach Unilock job depends on the slope, the subgrade condition, the staging plan, and whether a retaining structure is involved. A flat-lot paver patio in the Village is a different animal from a 20% grade driveway in Temple Hills that needs over-excavation and a geogrid. Here are the range numbers we quote from most often:

Project Type Typical Price Range
Paver Driveway Installation $7,000 – $18,000
Paver Patio Installation $3,500 – $11,000
Concrete Driveway Installation $4,500 – $12,000
Driveway Replacement $5,000 – $14,000

These are rough ranges, not quotes. The only way to get a real number is to walk the slope and look at the drainage. Our free estimate includes a site assessment, a written line-item quote, and a clear explanation of where the money is going. Call (855) 473-5620 to schedule yours.

FAQs – Unilock Construction in Laguna Beach

Can you install Unilock pavers on a steep Laguna Beach driveway that needs caissons or a pier-and-grade foundation? Yes. We’ve done paver fields on pier-and-grade deck systems and over retaining walls in Arch Beach Heights and Bluebird Canyon. The key is sequencing: the structural foundation gets engineered and inspected first, then we build the paver base on top so it drains independently of the structural system. Call us at (855) 473-5620 with your survey or geotech report and we’ll tell you what’s feasible.

Why does the joint sand on my Unilock driveway keep washing out every winter? Because your driveway’s grade and runoff volume are exceeding what standard joint sand can hold. Winter storm water sheeting off a steep Laguna Beach drive will jet the sand out of the joints, especially on Richcliff and Beacon Hill fields. The fix is usually a better sand spec, a channel drain to slow the water, and sometimes a different joint detail at the perimeter. A one-time re-sand won’t fix it if the drainage isn’t addressed. Call (855) 473-5620 for an evaluation, and we’ll show you what’s actually washing out.

Does my Unilock project in Laguna Beach need Coastal Commission or design-review approval? In many cases, yes. If your lot is in a coastal zone, or if the project triggers a design-review trigger (front-yard hardscape, hillside work, or a retaining structure over height), you’re going to need approval before we can pull permits. The Village and Canyon neighborhoods have their own design-review patterns. We navigate that paperwork as part of the project, and we can tell you early whether your project is likely to hit a snag. The sooner we know, the sooner we can plan the entitlement timeline around it.

Are Unilock pavers better than concrete for a salt-air hillside driveway here? Paver fields tolerate ground movement better than monolithic concrete slabs, and on Laguna Beach slopes where the subgrade shifts between wet and dry seasons, that’s a real advantage. Paver units move independently and can be re-laid if settlement happens. Concrete cracks. The trade-off is that paver base and edge restraint details have to be right, because the marine environment attacks the hardware. If your lot sits on a saturated slope, get a proper base design. Call (855) 473-5620 and we’ll price both options for your driveway.

How do you stage Unilock pallets on a tight Laguna lot where there’s no room to store them? We stage them on the street, with a City-approved encroachment permit if needed, and we crane them over the house when the side yard is too tight for a forklift. On Temple Hills and Bluebird Canyon lots where the street is narrow, we often schedule a single day of crane time to move every pallet at once rather than blocking the road for a week. That cost shows up in the bid as a staging line item, and we plan it before we order materials.
