Why Palo Alto Residents Choose Us for Abodu Service
San Bernardino Contractors works with Abodu units from the foundation up, and we’ve done it on the tightest infill lots Palo Alto has to offer. From the Eichler tracts south of Oregon Expressway to the older bungalow neighborhoods near downtown, we understand how these prefab units meet a slab, a hillside, or a historic district’s review board. We’re an independent Abodu service provider, not manufacturer-affiliated or authorized, which means we give you straight answers about what the factory shipped and what the lot actually needs. Ruben Castillo grew up watching his uncle reroof houses and frame garages on the Westside of San Bernardino, then sharpened his plan-reading and load-path skills at San Bernardino Valley College. Nearly two decades of framing, concrete work, and whole-home remodels later, he runs a crew that treats every Palo Alto Abodu like it’s part of someone’s permanent home, because it is. For broader Abodu sales & service, we’re your local team.

Common Abodu Construction Problems We Solve in Palo Alto
- Slab-severing during site work. In the Eichler neighborhoods south of Oregon Expressway, the original concrete slabs carry embedded radiant heating loops. A trencher cutting utility lines for an Abodu foundation will happily slice right through those loops if nobody scans first. We scan every slab before any core drilling or trenching, and we’ve rerouted more than one foundation plan to keep those loops intact.
- Design-review rejections on standard Abodu rooflines. Palo Alto’s design review often flags the factory-standard roof pitch, siding, and window trim on Abodu units. That means redesigns and resubmittals before foundation work even starts. We’ve been through enough of those reviews to know which details get approved and which ones send you back to the drawing board.
- Wet-winter waterproofing failures. Abodu panel joints and roof penetrations that would be fine in a drier climate can leak after a Palo Alto winter. Flat or low-slope roofs on mid-century lots don’t drain fast enough, and the water finds every seam. We detail those joints and penetrations during installation, not after the first rain.
- Foundation settlement on expansive clay. Lots around Palo Alto sit on adobe clay that expands and contracts with moisture. Some Abodu installs skip the over-excavation and engineered fill, and two years later the doors don’t close square. We dig it out and build a foundation that doesn’t move.
- Missing solar-ready and EV conduit. Abodu units don’t ship with the solar-ready wiring and EV conduit that Palo Alto’s Green Building Ordinance requires on new construction. If that work isn’t added during site prep, you fail inspection and the project stalls. We build it in from day one.
Abodu Service in Palo Alto: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Palo Alto runs on a high-value, highly-regulated building culture. The same town holds Stanford-influenced tech wealth, a deep inventory of pre-war and Eichler-era homes, and some of the strictest permitting and green-building expectations in the region. Construction here is less about volume and more about navigating entitlement, design review, and tight infill lots. Work that would be a one-page permit in a neighboring city can become a months-long design review process here, and clients expect the builder to speak that language. For Abodu owners specifically, this means the unit as shipped is a starting point, not a finished project. Palo Alto’s Green Building Ordinance mandates solar-ready wiring and EV conduit on all new construction, including prefab ADUs. Abodu units don’t ship with those features by default, so we add them during site work or your final inspection fails. That’s one example. The Eichler slab issue is another: utility trenches for Abodu units in those neighborhoods run straight through radiant heating loops unless the slab is scanned first. We scan. We’ve been through this enough times in 94306 and the surrounding neighborhoods that we plan for it from the first site visit. For full-service coverage across the city, see our Palo Alto service area coverage.
Abodu Models & Products We Service in Palo Alto
We service and install all three Abodu model lines: the Abodu One (one-bedroom, 500 sq ft), the Abodu Two (two-bedroom, 740 sq ft), and the Abodu Studio (single-room, 340 sq ft). For structural connections, panel seals, and electrical components, we source Abodu-specific OEM parts to keep your warranty intact. For standard fixtures and finishes, we use high-quality aftermarket equivalents when they meet or exceed OEM specs. We keep common seal kits, panel fasteners, and electrical components stocked locally so we’re not waiting on a factory shipment when quick Palo Alto turnaround matters. And we’ll always give you an honest repair-vs-replace assessment. Sometimes a $500 seal kit solves what looks like a $5,000 problem.

AfterAbodu Service Pricing in Palo Alto
Palo Alto Abodu projects land within predictable ranges, but the final number depends on your lot conditions, design-review requirements, and foundation work. Here are the ranges we work within:

| Home Addition | $45,000 – $130,000 |

What drives the cost: clay soil excavation, slab scanning and foundation redesigns, the green-building add-ons Palo Alto requires, and design-review resubmittals if the standard Abodu exterior gets flagged. Our free estimate includes a site walk, a slab scan when needed, and a line-item scope so you know exactly what you’re paying for before we start. Call (855) 473-5620 to schedule yours.

FAQs – Abodu Construction in Palo Alto
Yes, Palo Alto’s design review applies to any new ADU, including prefab Abodu units, and it typically adds anywhere from two to six months before foundation work begins. The review often flags Abodu’s standard rooflines, exterior finishes, and window trim, requiring redesigns and resubmittals. We’ve been through enough of these to anticipate what gets flagged and submit plans that clear review faster, and we bring that same expertise to our Emerald Lake Hills Abodu service. Call (855) 473-5620 to talk through your specific lot and what to expect.
Yes, it can, but only if the slab is scanned before any trenching or core drilling. The radiant heating loops in Eichler slabs south of Oregon Expressway run exactly where utility trenches and foundation piers often need to go. We scan every slab with ground-penetrating radar, then redesign foundations and trench routes to span the loops instead of cutting through them. In one Eichler neighborhood near Greer Park, we set an Abodu Two on a lot with original radiant slab heating. Before trenching for utilities, we scanned the slab and found the heating loops exactly where Abodu’s standard foundation plan called for a pier, so we redesigned the foundation to span the loops and rerouted the trench, avoiding a costly break and keeping the project on schedule. Call (855) 473-5620 for a site evaluation that includes slab scanning.
Foundation work for an Abodu on Palo Alto’s expansive clay typically requires over-excavation and engineered fill, which pushes foundation costs higher than a standard install. While exact numbers depend on the lot and the unit size, the total ADU construction range is $90,000 – $220,000, and a meaningful portion of that goes into the foundation when clay is present. Skipping the over-excavation saves money up front and costs far more in door realignment and cracked finishes later. If it’s not built right the first time, you’re just paying for it twice. Call (855) 473-5620 for a foundation-specific quote.
Palo Alto’s Green Building Ordinance requires new construction, including prefab ADUs, to include solar-ready wiring and EV conduit at minimum. Abodu units don’t ship with these features by default, so we add them during site work. If they’re not installed before the final inspection, the project fails and you’re back in line for another review cycle. Call (855) 473-5620 to make sure your Abodu meets Palo Alto’s green-building requirements from the start.
Palo Alto’s wet winters run from roughly November through March, and that rain window affects any Abodu install that’s mid-foundation or mid-panel-assembly. We schedule foundation pours and panel setting around the forecast, and we stage materials under covered protection so a passing storm doesn’t soak panel joints before they’re sealed. If rain halts work, we communicate the revised schedule immediately, not after you’ve noticed nobody showed up. Call (855) 473-5620 to talk about timing for your project.
